Briefly describe your symptoms and the medical condition that brought you to see the doctor.

I hurt my shoulder playing baseball last year and the first doctor I saw wanted to do surgery and told me I would be in rehab/recovery for 6 months and I would have to miss my football and rugby seasons. He told me I had a torn labrum. My mom sent my MRI results to Dr. Warme and he gave us a second opinion which did not recommend surgery. I lifted and did rehab with the athletic trainer at my school. Since then, I played a full rugby season and am currently playing football without having any issues with my shoulder. Thank you, Dr. Warme!

I am a competitive road bike racer, and crashed hard on my shoulder in a race. I knew immediately that the clavicle (collarbone) was broken. It actually did not hurt that bad as long as I immobilized my arm in the sling given to me by the EMT at the race. But, any range of motion with the shoulder was very uncomfortable and made things like bathing, getting dressed, and working quite difficult.

What one or two things stand out to you about your experience with your doctor and their team?

Dr. Warme was fantastic. He got me into his clinic quickly. He assessed my injury, and also how it would affect me specifically. He considered my job and also my hobbies. He explained that clavicle fractures can be managed non-operatively, but that my specific type of break had a high chance for poor bone healing if surgery was not done. Knowing that I was eager to recover and get back on the bike, he had me in the OR only 3 days after the accident. And the surgical result was perfect!

Briefly describe your symptoms and the medical condition that brought you to see the doctor.

In June 2013 I was hit by a wrong way driver while at work on my police motorcycle. I was taken to the Harborview emergency room after a first stop at a local hospital. I honestly do not remember much of that experience but I wound up in the ICU I met a multitude of doctors while I waited for surgery I must say the staff in the ICU was wonderful to all my friends and family who came to see me.. When you are a motorcycle officer you are part of a brotherhood so there were many, many officers in and around the ICU at all times it seemed.

I was told I had an "open book" pelvis fracture and a ruptured bladder to go with it. Of course I had no idea what that really meant for me or what it entailed to get me fixed up. Dr. Firoozabadi came to the ICU at some point and introduced himself to me. He was very calm and professional and even in my frightened state he was able to confer a sense of calm confidence to me. When it was time for surgery Dr. Firoozabadi took time to talk to my wife and put her at ease as much as he could. He made sure she was comfortable and updated often during my surgery. That meant more to me than you can know. At no time did he seem arrogant or uncaring. He did not treat us like just another pelvis patient. He and his team were professionals at all times. I can go on and on about this brilliant surgeon but there is just too many things to list.

I have spent almost 7 months in rehab since my surgery and plan on being back on the job this June. Thanks to my brilliant surgeon and his team and also my wonderful family I will be back working soon.

What one or two things stand out to you about your experience with your doctor and their team?

Dr. Firoozabadi spoke to us plainly and did not use overly technical terms. He answered all our questions and gave us good honest answers. He gave us his contact information and even called my wife and me when we needed to talk to him about something while I was in physical therapy.

Dr. Firoozabadi seemed like a buddy when we went to see him. He is genuinely interested in us as people instead of viewing us as just a medical case or one of dozens of people he sees every day. That means something in this sterile non personal world.

I first saw Dr. Warme and Jill Eggers-Knight for left rotator cuff repair, had it repaired once before but had reinjured it after continuing delivering freight 10-14 hours aday, Dr. warme was able to repair it once again with some ongoing discomfort but definately more tolerable.
Then again this last November Dr. Warme did a clean out of my right elbow due to overuse and it is better than it has been in quite afew years, I can even eat again without lowering my head to my hand and can comb my hair with very little discomfort, and getting better every day.

What one or two things stand out to you about your experience with your doctor and their team?

Dr. Warme and the whole team at UW seem to actually care about each and every person that come through their doors, you are treated with the utmost respect and compassion by everyone in reception right up to the operating room staff.
The follow up after surgery was surprising and very much appreciated after receiving a call at home from Dr. Warme the next morning at home to see how I was doing and if there was any concerns about my recovery.
Whenever I have seen Dr. Warme and Ms. Jill I am always greated with a warm smile and a hug, I feel like part of the UW family, Thank You.

Briefly describe your symptoms and the medical condition that brought you to see the doctor.

Failed rotator cup surgery. MRI showed a torn tendon and during recovery, after my surgeon at the time told me I could use the arm all I wanted the tendon severed completely. The surgeon at the time would not give a clear answer as to whether or not the tendon had completely failed. I went to the U.W. for a second opinion and doctor Warme said he could help me, that they have had great success reattaching torn bicep tendons. The surgery took a while to schedule due to holiday and vacation, available sugery dates but the surgery was eventualy scheduled. The tendon had been severed for a considerable time by that time but the results were fantastic! I had the same time off of work, no more than the last surgery but much less pain and the rehabilitation was far less painful due to the lower impact of the type of surgery done to restore the bicep. Additionaly the surgery actualy addressed the issue which was to reattach the bicep tendon where it was damaged instead of detaching the bicep tendon anchor point and another muscle and reattaching them in a new location when there was not indication of damage to the second muscle and the reattachment procedure would not address the issue of the damaged tendon. The results of the surgery done by Dr. Warme and his team, by addressing the issue at it's source by contrast had a much more satisfactory outcome resulting in full recovery of the arm and shoulder.

In a word, results.

I am a male, 86 years old, very active and with a big yard that I love to care for. We have an RV and we play golf and have lots of fun vacations. On July 24th I fell from a small ladder in my garage and fractured my pelvis and hip socket. Twelve days in Harborview and 9 hour surgery and 1 month in rehab and now I am doing well. It was a long road, but with the care of my wife and family I am now mobile and walking without a cane or walker and with very little pain.
My Dr. Firoozabodi preformed a wonderful surgery that gave me back my life.

Sternoclavicular subluxation that began when my arm was pulled on by a patient I was treating. The pain was immediate and since it was an L&I claim I had to go the route of Physical Therapy for 4months before they decided I should see a surgeon. I had limited range of motion, pain in neck from bone pulling muscles downward, and a real nasty click and pop when either pulling my shoulders back or shrugging my shoulders.

What one or two things stand out to you about your experience with your doctor and their team?

This latest one seems to be progressing along the same lines. I will be back to work in 8 weeks. Woo! Hoo! I will also give Dr Warme and his team extra points. I had a severe dislocation many years ago with many years of dislocations (50 or 60) and 3 previous surgeries. I had pain at night time and occational dislocations while sleeping, and pain in multiple area's around the shoulder.

I was somewhat tired of bouncing from doctor to doctor that was unsure of what to do, doctors who weren't willing to accept a difficult case, and doctors who told me that I was OK and I would just get better.

What one or two things stand out to you about your experience with your doctor and their team?

The thing that stood out to me the most during our first visit was that despite the results of the clinical exams, xrays and MRI's. Dr Warme turned to his students and fellows and explaned that I was telling them what was wrong. Meaning the weight that my description of what and how I am feeling means more that a imperfect exam or xray.....which ultimately was exactly right. My imaging and physical exam weren't completely conclusive, but at surgery everything I had explained was clearly identified and repaired.

The day of my surgery I felt like I was the only patient in the entire hospital. The level of care and attention was amazing. The confidence and calm about a situation that I was pretty nervous about was something that I have never experienced before. I have had 12 surgeries, and this group and Dr Warme are the only ones who put me at ease and made me feel like I was the only one there that day. The communication before we went to the operating room by everyone was amazing....there were no questions left unanswered.

I had only seen Dr Warme 1 time prior to surgery, but he is an amazing listener, made me feel like Ive known him my whole life and I trusted that I was getting the best care and he the best guy working on me that day. I am truly thankful and thank God for Dr Warme and his team.

I was treated conservatively for shoulder pain by a different doctor. After a year of PT and cortisone injections my pain returned and my limitations grew worse. Luckily for me I decided to get an opinion from Dr. Warme and the PA, Jill Eggers-Knight at the ESSC in Bellevue. Dr. Warme explained very thoroughly my shoulder issue and that a rotator repair would be my best option. I decided to have the surgery and am so happy that I did. Thanks to Dr. Warme and his surgery team and my physical therapist, Debra Parrot I am now able to do the things I used to do before my injury and am looking forward to getting out on the golf course with my husband!

Dr Warme laid out my options in layman's terms. Because of his lifestyle of rigorous physical activity he could better convey the pros and cons to my options of having surgery or not. He let ME decide what path was better for my lifestyle. I chose surgery. He emphasized the importance of physical therapy and illustrated what could happen if I didn't follow through. I did exactly what Dr Warme advised and I recuperated in no time. In fact I've been an avid runner over the years and just completed a full marathon this year. Dr Warme tells it like it is, yet is compassionate and truly cares.

My condition had become progressively worse after a failed attempt (by a different orthopaedic surgeon in California) to reattach my pectoralis major tendon. I struggled to regain much strength and function over two years following the first surgery. I began to sense that the tendon had not been completely reattached and I searched across the United States for an orthopaedic surgeon that would consider performing a "revision surgery" on my pec tendon. After losing more than 60% of my strength and functionality in my right arm/chest and searching (over 2 years) for somebody who could help, I came to Seattle to meet with Dr. Matsen and Dr. Warme.

What one or two things stand out to you about your experience with your doctor and their team?

My experience at the UW Medical Center was extraordinary. I cannot say that enough. I met with a dozen orthopaedic specialists before meeting with Dr. Warme. None of the previous physicians gave me even an ounce of hope or condidence regarding my injury and possible revision surgery. I came to Seattle from Southern California in hope that somebody would have some experience with my particular injury. It felt amazing to speak with Dr. Warme and explain to him what happened to my pec tendon. The most amazing part of the experience was when I asked Dr. Warme how many of these types of pec surgeries he had completed since it was a pretty rare procedure in the field of orthopaedics. He confidently informed me that he had performed approximately 20 of them with a 100% success rate. And the best part of the conversation was when he looked at me and sincerely told me that he could fix my chest. He said he was confident that he could get the tendon back on the bone. And THAT is exactly what Dr. Warme did.

When I woke up from the nightmare of my horrific car accident, I soon learned, as an elementary school teacher reading that infamous poetry line, that "all kings horses and all the kings men, couldn't put Humpty Dumpty together again", depended on whether one had the Best Pelvic Surgeon in the country!

But you Dr. Reza did in fact put ME back together again!

Your calming and sure sounding voice from our first meeting in ICU, allowed a very frightened me, the confidence to begin my road to recovery and move forward with the surgery to repair my damaged Pelvis.

I apologize again for giving you a bit of a scare, when I decided to use the restroom on my own …the day after my surgery!! But, I could not remember if ANYONE told me I couldn't! Anyway, as you said, after I was x-rayed to make certain I did not ruin your masterful work, at least you knew I would be able to walk!

With your instructions to the physical therapists, I asked them, characteristically, What CAN'T I do! Well as you know, 4 months later, thanks to your skills and unselfish encouragement, I am back teaching my first graders!

I coached multiple sports for 35 years. Gymnastics was probably the hardest on my body, especially my shoulders. The humeral heads were worn flat. My left shoulder was the worst, but I continued to exercise, refusing to give in due to my active life. For several years the condition deteriorated further until I had difficulty lifting my arm above my shoulder and I was in constant pain with every movement. The joint actually seemed to sag out of socket and lock up. It was compromising my activities and I could not get in a good exercise work-out because of the pain and limitations.

What one or two things stand out to you about your experience with your doctor and their team?

Dr. Warme's involvement in outdoor activities, especially his mountain climbing background struck a chord with me. I felt like he understood where I was coming from and what I wanted to get back to doing. He said he could put me back doing what I used to do; not simply get rid of the pain. He was honest with me; saying there were three parts to this procedure - (1) His part - surgery, (2) My part - religious exercise during and after recovery and (3) God's part. Recognizing God's part is not a weakness, but a strength in my book and an important measure of a man.

I am a 52 yr old female, living with Rheumatoid arthritis & Fibromyalgia since age 35 & I live in Boise, ID. In June of 2010 I tore up my left shoulder beyond fixing after trying to get a 1/2 gallon of milk out of fridge. My right shoulder already was a non-moving body part due to 4 Labral and Cuff tear surgeries. So my doc here went on a search for someone to perform the "REVERSE ROTATOR CUFF REPLACEMENT" in my left shoulder at age 50, a surgery not recommended till one is over 60. After going to U of U then almost every shoulder doc here and 1 other doc in Seattle no one said yes. Then on Oct. 8, 2010 I flew up and saw Dr. Warme. After seeing Alex, his PA then, and the doc, within 30 minutes we were setting up a surgery date.

My left knee kept hyperextending when I was playing soccer or jogging. There wasn't much pain at all, it just was annoying. I assumed I had pulled something, but come to find out I had completely torn my ACL. It was a pretty clean break.

My right knee, I returned to playing soccer too early from my left knee surgery and I heard a loud audible popping sound and pain immediately rushed to my knee, leg and back. It hurt to walk, I couldn't walk on my own and the swelling started immediately. I had completely torn my right ACL, tore my posterior horn and body of the medial meniscus, sprained my fibular collateral ligament, strained the medial head of my gastrocnemius and had mild chondromalacia patella.

What one or two things stand out to you about your experience with your doctor and their team?

The doctors explained the options for replacing my ACL and it was a hard choice but they answered all of my questions and made it all relevant to the sports I play.

Restricted range of motion. Severe discomfort at times. Hip replacement in December of 2007. Dr. Paul Manner. After such a positive experience with the UofW Orthopedic department returning for an examination and consultation regarding my shoulder was guaranteed.

What one or two things stand out to you about your experience with your doctor and their team?

Dr. Warme has a gift that goes beyond his surgical skills. Totally invested in me and my best course of action is what I remember most. When he spoke to my wife after the operation she was impressed with his easy going manner and approachability. I have to mention the great smile. I also have to believe that any surgical team working with Dr. Warme would be greatly motivated.

My first symptoms were pain in the shoulders caused by rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. My left shoulder was worse; where I needed to assist my arm with the other hand. The other (right) shoulder was a candidate for replacement at that time, too. Then I shattered the right shoulder with a fall from a ladder.

"Obviously I am a big dreamer. But I don't think you should just dream your dreams. Go out and fight for them. Make them happen!" says UW Huskies Gymnast and Senior Kylie Sharp.
Diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis and an overlapping condition, primary sclerosing cholangitis, the 22-year-old has faced seven medical procedures over the last dozen years.
"I called doctors all over the country, and no one had ever heard of a gymnast in college - no one had heard of any athlete - that had autoimmune hepatitis with this overlap," said Dr. John O'Kane, UW Associate Professor of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine and the Huskies' head team physician. "The desire to do this and the strength to do this despite all the different ways that has made this hard for you is tremendously impressive," O'Kane said to Sharp.
