Briefly describe your symptoms and the medical condition that brought you to see the doctor.

On May 20th, 2013 my then 3 year old daughter Tylyn, and I were finishing up yardwork and I needed to pull the cars back into the garage. I sent my daughter inside as I got into the car. Little did I know that Tylyn had gone into the house and ran back out through another door before I moved the car. She wanted to hide from me so she chose to crawl under the back of my car and hide. I put the car into reverse and let off the brakes to hear an awful scream. I put the car in park and ran around to the back passenger side to see my rear wheel sitting on top of my three year old daughter's pelvis. Horrified, I jumped back into the car and drove the car forward back off of her just as my wife came and scooped her up. We were freaking out as you can imagine. We dialed 911 and went to our neighbors house as she is an ER nurse to wait for paramedics. We were taken to Harborview Trauma where it was determined that Tylyn's pelvis was broken in multiple places. Dr Firoozabadi and team took over from there. As you can imagine, my wife and I were in a state of shock, worrying that we were going to lose our precious daughter. I was also taken over by the guilt of causing this accident.

What one or two things stand out to you about your experience with your doctor and their team?

Dr. Firoozabadi did an amazing job slowing down time for me when he talked to reassure us that everything was going to be ok. These words are near impossible to believe when you are in the moment, but I could see that he truly felt for us as a doctor as well as a father. Tylyn went into an initial surgery immediately to stabilize her pelvis and was then set for surgery a day later to fix the breaks. The breaks were fairly rare and Dr Firoozabadi wanted time to bounce this case off on other top Orthopedic surgeons around the country to ensure the best aproach for the surgery. He reassured us that he wanted to give her the best chance to be able to go back to functioning as a normal kid again. I remember very vividly the day surgery was set and my daughter getting rolled into the operating room she looked at me and begged me not to leave her side. She asked me if she was leaving to go see baby Jesus. That moment was the darkest moment of my life as I reassured my daughter that everything was going to be ok fighting back my emotions. Dr. Firoozabadi stopped to talk to my wife and I before going into surgery to tell us what to expect. He told us that the surgery would take anywhere from one to four hours but to not worry if it takes longer. He said that he was going to take his time to make sure the surgery was perfect and everything was aligned 100% before he would be satisfied. He also said that he will be taking the time needed as if Tylyn was his own daughter. This gave us faith that we had the best person possible taking care of our daughter.

Briefly describe your symptoms and the medical condition that brought you to see the doctor.

My girlfriend and I decided to rent a jet ski on Memorial Day weekend while spending the weekend in our RV at Moses Lake. We left the dock in the early afternoon on Memorial Day and were driving to various coves checking out all the wildlife on this sunny summer day. The weather was great high 70's and the lake was smooth. We decided to head back to the dock to have some lunch. On our way back we encountered 3 huge waves. When we hit the first one we both came off the seat of the ski and then back down on top of the ski with the passenger landing on top of me, and into the water we went. A couple (Mike and Linda) in a boat saw us in the water and offered their swim platform while we assessed if there were injuries. I felt as I had only had the wind knocked out of me and just needed a few minutes to catch my breath. When I tried to get up that’s when I felt the sharp pain in my hips and agreed to seek medical attention. Mike and Lynda were so nice and gave us a ride to the dock were they had called for help to meet us there. Their son took the ski back to the dock and tied it up for the owner to pick up. The EMT's met us at the dock and put me on the stretcher and off to the Moses Lake ER I went. After the scan I was notified by the attending physician that I would soon be on my way to Harbor View. The flight there was quick and the two lady EMT's that attended me were great, they managed my pain and every aspect of my care. I woke up in the ICU on Monday to meet Dr. Firoozabadi and his team of experts. He explained that I had an "Open Book" fracture of my pelvis and I needed surgery and what would be accomplished during the procedure. He and his staff also helped my family understand the procedure and put any concerns to rest. Being a member of IBEW the word was getting out to the brotherhood about what had happened and soon many of the brothers were by to visit. Being an employee of one of Washington's top 100 companies, there were soon many visitors from work as well, including several owners. The support of all these caring people was and is greatly appreciated. It seemed as though this huge family was always there for me and my family. I woke up post-surgery and was soon met by Dr. Firoozabadi assuring me of the success of the surgery and answering any questions that my family and I had. His team also helped with all the paperwork for insurance and post-operative and ICU care. They went above and beyond all of my expectations. After several weeks at Harbor View I was transferred to an assisted living facility while my home was being modified to accommodate me in a wheel chair. After a couple of months at home in the wheel chair I was able to start taking steps with crutches. At 4 months post-surgery I was able to begin taking steps without the crutches. At 5 months I'm walking although a bit wobbly. I'm looking forward to being able to get back to work in a few more months. I have been working out 5 days a week most of the time in hopes to help my body get back in shape to be able to do the heavy physical construction work I'm used to. Thanks to Dr. Firoozabadi and his excellent team this will be possible.

Briefly describe your symptoms and the medical condition that brought you to see the doctor.

In June 2013 I was hit by a wrong way driver while at work on my police motorcycle. I was taken to the Harborview emergency room after a first stop at a local hospital. I honestly do not remember much of that experience but I wound up in the ICU I met a multitude of doctors while I waited for surgery I must say the staff in the ICU was wonderful to all my friends and family who came to see me.. When you are a motorcycle officer you are part of a brotherhood so there were many, many officers in and around the ICU at all times it seemed.

I was told I had an "open book" pelvis fracture and a ruptured bladder to go with it. Of course I had no idea what that really meant for me or what it entailed to get me fixed up. Dr. Firoozabadi came to the ICU at some point and introduced himself to me. He was very calm and professional and even in my frightened state he was able to confer a sense of calm confidence to me. When it was time for surgery Dr. Firoozabadi took time to talk to my wife and put her at ease as much as he could. He made sure she was comfortable and updated often during my surgery. That meant more to me than you can know. At no time did he seem arrogant or uncaring. He did not treat us like just another pelvis patient. He and his team were professionals at all times. I can go on and on about this brilliant surgeon but there is just too many things to list.

I have spent almost 7 months in rehab since my surgery and plan on being back on the job this June. Thanks to my brilliant surgeon and his team and also my wonderful family I will be back working soon.

What one or two things stand out to you about your experience with your doctor and their team?

Dr. Firoozabadi spoke to us plainly and did not use overly technical terms. He answered all our questions and gave us good honest answers. He gave us his contact information and even called my wife and me when we needed to talk to him about something while I was in physical therapy.

Dr. Firoozabadi seemed like a buddy when we went to see him. He is genuinely interested in us as people instead of viewing us as just a medical case or one of dozens of people he sees every day. That means something in this sterile non personal world.

Briefly describe your symptoms and the medical condition that brought you to see the doctor.

I am a male, 86 years old, very active and with a big yard that I love to care for. We have an RV and we play golf and have lots of fun vacations. On July 24th I fell from a small ladder in my garage and fractured my pelvis and hip socket. Twelve days in Harborview and 9 hour surgery and 1 month in rehab and now I am doing well. It was a long road, but with the care of my wife and family I am now mobile and walking without a cane or walker and with very little pain.
My Dr. Firoozabodi preformed a wonderful surgery that gave me back my life.
We are very grateful for the talent and compassion of our Dr.

When I woke up from the nightmare of my horrific car accident, I soon learned, as an elementary school teacher reading that infamous poetry line, that "all kings horses and all the kings men, couldn't put Humpty Dumpty together again", depended on whether one had the Best Pelvic Surgeon in the country!

But you Dr. Reza did in fact put ME back together again!

Your calming and sure sounding voice from our first meeting in ICU, allowed a very frightened me, the confidence to begin my road to recovery and move forward with the surgery to repair my damaged Pelvis.

I apologize again for giving you a bit of a scare, when I decided to use the restroom on my own …the day after my surgery!! But, I could not remember if ANYONE told me I couldn't! Anyway, as you said, after I was x-rayed to make certain I did not ruin your masterful work, at least you knew I would be able to walk!

With your instructions to the physical therapists, I asked them, characteristically, What CAN'T I do! Well as you know, 4 months later, thanks to your skills and unselfish encouragement, I am back teaching my first graders!

And each time I hear that Humpty Dumpty poem, I can't help smile and think of YOU!
